A creature is at its’ best when it is pleasing its’ maker. A man will truly be most fulfilled when he pleases his Father in heaven.
You have heard that it has been said that the chief end of man is to glorify God.
This is true. But what does it mean? Why do we keep looking to our own fulfillment to gage whether we are living up to our purpose in life? Would not the author of life be a better judge of whether or not we are doing what we were designed to do? Perhaps when our happiness is rooted in the happiness of God we would find fulfillment. Oh that we would seek to not just understand the heart of God but that we would ask Him to give us His heart. Oh that we would imitate Him in every way and in every step. It’s not about rules and laws about what He asks us to do and what not to do. It’s about NOT seeking to fulfill our own desires and rather to start seeking after what makes Him pleased. Do we not find this to be our example on earth? Somehow, we are most satisfied when we are making others happy. Do we lack the understanding that the same is true with the Father of all?? We will only be most fulfilled in life when we please the Father of lights with whom there is no shifting shadows or lack of fulfillment.

4On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:4)

After looking at all these verses, I think it’s pretty safe to say that another way of stating that the chief end of man is to glorify God, is to say that the cheif end of man is to please God. It was God who in the begining looked upon his creation and stated that it was “good” (sounds like He was pleased), and it is Jesus Himself from whom I hope to one day hear the words, “well done, good and faithful servant.” In other words, I hope the resounding theme of my life causes my Father in heaven to be pleased.
