The Chief End of Man: Conclusion

chiefendofman2There seems to be a misconception that certain activities in life are spiritual and that some activities are secular.  But as we’ve seen thus far, life is not divided up into sub categories.  One cannot worship God on Sunday and think that God does not care what he worships on Monday.

31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  (Romans 12:1-2)

“It is for a very different reason that religion cannot occupy the whole of life in the sense of excluding all natural activities.  For, of course, in some sense, it must occupy the whole of life.  There is no question of a compromise between the claims of God and the claims of culture, or politics, or anything else.” (C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, pgs. 53-54)

“Yet in spite of this it is clear that Christianity does not exclude any of the ordinary human activities.  St. Paul tells people to get on with their jobs.  He even assumes that Christians may go to dinner parties, and, what is more, dinner parties given by pagans.  Our Lord attends a wedding and provides miraculous wine.” (C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, pg. 54)

All our merely natural activities will be accepted, if they are offered to God, even the humblest, and all of them, even the noblest, will be sinful if they are not.  Christianity does not simply replace our natural life and substitute a new one; it is rather a new organization which exploits, to its own supernatural ends, these natural materials.” (C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, pg. 54)

Christianity is a way of life.  It is not just a part or section of life.  It is a whole way of life.  True Christianity must affect every area of my life.  Just as any IMPORTANT relationship would affect me in almost every way.  I would not wish to bring anything or do anything that would affect the most important relationship(s) in my life.

While living all of life in such a way as to please God through these natural means, we must remember that it is the chief end of man to live in a reconciled relationship with God and please Him in everything we say and do.  We can do this by being obedient to God which shows that we love Him first and foremost and His second-most important command is to love one another.  Therefore we please God most when we love our brother and sister thereby fulfilling the law of Christ.
